Abstract: Arguments pro and contra convergent realism – underdetermination of theory by observational evidence and pessimistic meta-induction from past falsity – are considered. It is argued that, to meet the counter-arguments challenge, convergent realism should be considerably changed with a help of modification of the propositions from this meta-programme “hard core” or “protecting belt”. Two well-known convergent realism rivals – “entity realism” of Nancy Cartwright and Ian Hacking and John Worrall’s “structural realism” – are considered. Entity realism’s main drawback is fundamental laws underestimation. As for structural realism, its limitation of theoretical propositions by pure structural ones is ineffective. One always can transform propositions about objects into propositions about structures and vice versa. Both conceptions are kinds of “metaphysical revisionism” that tries to reformulate the good old convergent realism propositions using more decent language and applying ad hoc modifications of the solutions first obtained within the anti-realist epistemological meta-programmes. It is stated that to overcome the troubles of convergent realism one has to turn from classical or “metaphysical” realism to nonclassical or “internal” one and to coherent theory of truth. Internal realism has no troubles in solving the problem of empirically-equivalent theoretical descriptions and historical meta-induction problem, but gets the problem of scientific knowledge objectivity instead. Where does this objectivity come from? One of the answers is proposed by the scientific knowledge growth model elaborated by Rinat Nugayev and (independently) by Peter Galison. Each paradigm is a local viewpoint determined by the peculiarities of a culture into which its creator (Aristotle, Ptolemy, Newton, Maxwell, Lorentz, Einstein). was submerged. However, the meeting of the different paradigms leads to their interaction; as a result, the crossbred theoretical objects are constructed. Through these systems the infiltration of one paradigm on the other’s domain takes place. After the old paradigms’ grinding the new ones emerge that reconcile to each other much better than the old ones. Scientific theories reconcile results in elimination of many contingent details. In the process of competition more universal components survive. It is demonstrated that the process of objective knowledge genesis takes place in modern superstring theory too. The list of its drawbacks is rather long; it is clear that the theory cannot pretend on the role of the Theory of Everything. Nevertheless the process of argumentation pro and contra convergent realism – underdetermination of theory by observational evidence and pessimistic meta-induction from past falsity – are considered. It is argued that, to meet the counter-arguments challenge, convergent realism should be considerably changed with a help of modification of the propositions from this meta-programme “hard core” or “protecting belt”. It is stated that to overcome the troubles of convergent realism one has to turn from classical or “metaphysic” of quantum field theory and general relativity interpenetration have already begun.

What Can We Do? A Philosophical Analysis of Individual Self-determination Fabio Macioce Abstract: The principle of self-determination, as commonly intended, is based on a formal and individualistic view of liberty rights. This perspective, however, is inconsistent with the needs of a community, and particularly with the necessity to promote a relatively stable social order, and an integration between subjects. I propose a different perspective that takes into account the relationships rather than the individual. In particular, I will try to demonstrate 1) that any community implement a specific social order, that is a complex of practices; 2) that any social practices express specific values, 3) that these values are the result of historical and cultural circumstances, 4) that they are subject to an ongoing public debate, and finally 5) that only if the individual praxis is consistent with these values can it lead to recognition of rights. In that perspective does not exist a general liberty to determine itself, outside of a specific relational situation. It could only be affirmed that one has a practical liberty (not a right) to do and to act as it wants, but its rights depends on relationships in which the person is engaged.

→2010, №4 Problem of «Chinese Room» in the Context of Functionalism Discussing (in Russian) Dmitry Kazennov Abstract: This article furmulates three theses regarding John Searle’s thought experiment called “Chinese room”. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the internal logical contradictions of said thought experiment. The first point concerns the ability of the "Chinese room" to perform specific tasks Turing’s "imitation game" requires, such as value-judgments about the subject. The second thesis concerns question of term "understanding" being used by Searle. Argued that this term is an abstract function (of a brain), Searle’s using of the said term is a case of functionalism, therefore Kalke’s critics of Putnam’s functionalism applies. The third thesis of this article identifies illocutive assertions as expression assertions, intentional states as emotional states, which allows suggesting that recreating of intentionality is a recreating of reflexes.

Alvin Plantinga's Modal Argument: formalization problem and the concept of existence (in Russian) Julia Gorbatova Abstract: This article deals with a modal version of the ontological argument, proposed by the American philosopher Alvin Plantinga in the 70's of last century. This approach to the formulation of the modal argument has been very productive and still causes concern, both among ordinary believers, and among philosophers and theologians. In the article special attention is paid to the following questions: (1) formalization of the modal argument, (2) the consequences of such a formalization, (3) criticism of Kant and the modal version of the ontological argument.

The author consider a number of classical definitions («true as correspondence to reality», «true as utility», «true as coherence») and deflationist's objections against such possibility. The author concludes that the gradual development of deflationism leads to negation of essence of this concept. Since the essence of any concept is identified by the definition, the negation of the essence of truth leads to the denial of the possibility of its definition, and this in turn leads to the negation of the criterion of truth, because the correct definition should be formulated as a criterion establishes conditions for the interchangeability of terms.

Phenomenal Consciousness
(in Russian)
Dmitry Ivanov Abstract: The paper deals with the analysis of Block's notion of two kinds of consciousness: phenomenal consciousness and access consciousness. Following Block, it is argued that insufficient attention has been paid to phenomenal aspects of our mental life in contemporary philosophy of mind. And it is exactly due to these aspects the task of explanation of consciousness turns out to be the hard problem. But Block's approach to phenomenal consciousness has a number of disadvantages. First of all it allows epiphenomenalism. To avoid negative consequences of epiphenomenalism Dennett's suggestion to consider the problem of phenomenal consciousness as the matter of "richness of content" and "degree of influence" is adopted in the paper. In accordance with his ideas it is proposed to consider phenomenal consciousness as informational processes that achieve certain level of complexity and integrity.

Parfit, Nihilism and Personal Identity
(in Russian)
Igor Gasparov Abstract: In the paper I offer some criticisms on Parfitian account of personal identity. Firstly, I show that his view amounts to a position, wich I call 'nihilism', the view, that persons do not exist. Secondly, I argue that his account of personal identity is not consistent with the classical view of identity that Parfit seems to accept.

The Concept 'Sign' in the Context of Cognition, Communication and Aesthetical Experience
(in Russian)
Alexander Nesterov Abstract: The paper considers possibility of usage of the concept “sign” for description of the process of cognition, as well as difficulties arising when modeling communicative processes, processes of cognition being taken into account. Applicability of the suggested construction for the analysis of non-object communication is demonstrated by the example of the so-called “aesthetic sign”.

What are Propositions?
(in Russian)
Lev Lamberov Abstract: In the article the discussion about how we should translate the term ‘proposition’ is continued. It is proposed a well-grounded analysis of Frege’s semantic theory and comparsion it with Russell’s conceptions supposing that such a comparison may shed light on this discussion. Besides, to clarify the concept of proposition the author places high emphasis on the “propositions’ problems” which embraces questions that arise whilst discussing this concept.

Some Reflections about Alain Badiou’s Approach to Platonism in Mathematics
Miriam Franchella Abstract: A reproach has been done many times to post-modernism: its picking up mathematical notions or results, mostly by misrepresenting their real content, in order to strike the readers and obtaining their assent only by impressing them (i.e. through the authority of mathematics itself). In this paper I intend to point out that although Alain Badiou’s approach to philosophy starts with taking distance both from analytic philosophy and from French post-modernism, the categories that he uses for labelling logicism, formalism and intuitionism do not reflect the real content of the foundational schools. Hence, a re-thinking from him would be required about them, otherwise he would risk the same reproaches as post-modernists.

A New Approach to the Incommensurability of Scientific Paradigms in T. Kuhn’s Theory
Andrei Zavaliy Abstract: The notion of incommensurability as applied to competing scientific theories was challenged on various grounds ever since the publication of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962). Kuhn’s critics argue that the notion of incommensurability is either incoherent (when interpreted as ‘untranslatability’), or false (when construed in terms of the impossibility of meaningful comparison between the paradigms). This paper challenges both interpretations. I attempt to show that the claim that scientific paradigms are incommensurable implies neither that the one cannot be translated into another’s ‘language’, nor that they cannot be compared to each other with regard to the scope of their respective applications, precision of predictions, or simplicity. However, it is argued that there is a sense in which one can claim that the incommensurable theories cannot be meaningfully compared, namely, when by ‘comparison’ is meant ‘a comparison of theories with how the things really are’.
